I would like to take this opportunity to thank SIA for giving me the chance to
study in this wonderful institute. Of my three years studying here, Iˇm really grateful for
all the help and support given by the lecturers, staff and friends I've make along the way.
Even though I'm deaf, I really appreciate everyone for making me part of "the gang", I never
once felt left out because of my disability. Lastly, I'm proud to be a SIA graduate. Thank You!

Karen Lo Yee Lee, 25, is among one of the proud graduates of Sabah Institute of Art this year
& she is mute and deaf. She has hardly any knowledge and skills related to design when she
entered SIA three years ago. However, she is hard working, talented & willing to learn. Thus,
she managed to graduate with a Certificate in Interior Design.
Karen decided to take up the Interior Design course in SIA despite of her initial fear of
being lonely and isolated as a special student. Quite the contrary, she eventually became
the darling among her classmates, perhaps because she is 'special'.
Communication might be a problem in her learning process. But she persisted to learn as much as
she could. Lecturers spent more time to explain through writing and showing of artwork sample.
For presentation, her close friend Chiew Ting Ting took pleasure to read out her presentation
script on her behalf. As the result of this beautiful friendship, Chiew picked up sign language
after three years.
Teaching a mute and deaf student is an unforgettable and enriching experience in my life.
Hopefully, there will be a place for Karen to sharpen her skill and potential. Congratulations
and all the best!
