Sabah Institute of Art (SIA) is an established institution of higher learning specialized in Art and Design. It was established in Kota Kinabalu some 16 years ago. Initially offering only Diploma in Interior Design, SIA expanded its Art and Design curriculum to Graphic Design, Building Design, Music Studies and Fashion Design at Diploma level. Today, SIA offers wide selection of Art and Design courses at its main centre in Kota Kinabalu and its affiliated learning centres in Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, Xiamen, Hangzhou, Harbin, Beijing and Shen Zhen.

In 2006, SIA has established a strategic partnership with the new Klang Campus of Island College of Technology (ICT), offering Art and Design programmes up to degree level. With this alliance, SIA established the SIA Professional Skills Centre within ICT Klang to offer skill certificate courses endorsed by the International Council of Interior Architects and Designers (ICIAD).

The objective of SIA is to promote the Arts and to provide training for talented art students. Thus, the institute endeavors to ensure that all graduating students have a solid academic foundation, as well as practical skills, creativity and technical competency required for the media and design industries. The institute encourages experimentation, critiques, and most of all, excellence in Arts.

SIA has achieved many milestones for the past 16 years, including accolades for its academic excellence, due to the tireless effort of its committed faculty heads, lecturers, administration staff and the students themselves.

Students in their final year are usually much sought-after by industry practitioners, and many also ventured out to Singapore and various parts of China for industrial placements on the invitation of the leading design firms in those countries.


Our diploma level courses are:

  • Interior Design, or better known as Interior Architecture today.
  • Graphic Design or Visual Communication.
  • Fashion Design, in collaboration with the Paris-American Academy in France.
  • Architecture, a course approved by Persatuan Akitek Malaysia.
  • Music Studies, in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah.



Academic Strengths

SIA has recorded many milestones, including accolades for its academic excellance, due to the tireless efforts of its committed faculty heads, lecturers, administration staff and students themselves. Students in their final year at SIA are usually much sought-after by industry practitioner, and many have ventured out to Singapore and various parts of China for industrial placements on the kind invitation of leading design firms in those countries.

The Institute is also the authorized Admissions and Learning Center for the Inter-American University's courses conducted in Southeast and East Asia, particularly China. Students currently pursuing Diploma courses in Interior Design, Graphic Design, Fashion Design, Music Studies and Architecture (Building Design) at SIA are automatically eligible for credit transfers into this prestigious US University's programmes, thus enabling the students to pursue undergraduate courses leading to a Bachelor of Arts Degree or Postgraduate programmed leading to a Master Degree or even a Doctorate Degree eventually.

Location

SIA is located at Mile 5, Penampang Road, which can be reached within minutes from Kota Kinabalu City Center and also from Kota Kinabalu International Airport. It is located along a major bus route.

Sabah is the second largest state in Malaysia and it is famous worldwide for its tallest peak in South East Asia, Mount Kinabalu which towers 4095 metres (13,432 ft) from the crocker mountain range, dominating the surrounding landscape. Sabah has a wide diversity of flora and fauna and off Sabah's coast the waters are diving enthusiasts' dream.Located at the northeast corner of Borneo Island, it was named 'Land Below The Wind' by maritime traders during the ancient days because it lies below the typhoon belt. Its population of about 2 million are from 32 various indigenous groups. Amongst them are Kadazan, Murut, Bajau, Kedayan, Sulu, Biasaya, Rumanau, Minokok, and Rungus.


Achievements



In 2003, SIA was awarded the Asia Pacific e-Entrepreneur Excellence Award 2003 for Excellence Leadership.

One of the objectives of the Asia Pacific e-Entrepreneur Excellence Award is to ˇ§feature substantially strong and stable businesses in the market, with excellent performance in all areas, which pioneered in significant contributions towards the society. They would serve as a model in this age of e-economy and subsequently lead to the development of an ˇ§Asia Pacific / Malaysian Credible Business Community. This would improve the industry's overall image, and furthermore encourage other enterprises to actively participate in this area, to accept changes and innovate, and to establish competitive advantages, in order to embrace the challenges posed by the electronic-era.ˇ¨
